Grants Awarded

Foundation 51 Funds Eleven Grants Totaling $14,910 for Cumberland/North Yarmouth
School District. Several grants
support district’s focus on literacy
CUMBERLAND/NORTH YARMOUTH - Foundation 51 has announced the recipients of its
Fall 2006 grants cycle, with $14,910 awarded to 11 grant applicants within the
Cumberland/North Yarmouth school community. Foundation 51 is a non-profit
organization founded to promote educational excellence within Maine School
Administrative District 51, serving students from Cumberland and North Yarmouth.
Teachers, students, parents, and community members are eligible to apply for
grants twice a year; the fall 2006 grant recipients are as follows:

Mabel I. Wilson School, for sets of fiction and
non-fiction books in varied reading levels, for books on tape for the
second-grade looping class, and for a phonics and word study lesson program
for kindergarten classes.

North Yarmouth Memorial School, to purchase
picture books for fourth-grade readers.

Greely Middle School, to fund tickets for musical
experience ”Le Vent du Nord” for the sixth-grade class; for tickets for the
Peabody Essex Museum for a seventh-grade field trip; for an African drumming
workshop; to purchase probes that work with the students’ laptops to measure
motion for science experiments; and to fund an eighth-grade field trip.

Greely High School, to purchase in-classroom
libraries.

District-wide, for a Literacy Intervention grant
to fund new curriculum materials, staff development, and student materials
to support the district’s focus on literacy.
"We were thrilled to receive so many literacy-focused grant requests this fall.
It’s very rewarding to fund grants that support the District’s needs," says Don
Russell, President of Foundation 51. “Our fall auction is our primary fund
raiser, and it was a huge success. We’d like to thank the many volunteers who
work tirelessly every year to pull this off so that we can continue to fund
these important grant requests. We have big plans for 2007 and look forward to
continuing our mission of promoting educational excellence in our community.”
The Foundation currently is accepting grant requests for its Spring 2007 cycle;
applications are available online at www.foundation51.org. The deadline is
February 9.

Foundation 51 was established in 1998 to
promote educational excellence in MSAD 51 by funding initiatives that improve
teaching and learning and by inspiring community involvement for the benefit of
our schools. To date, the Foundation has funded $220,000 in school activities,
learning programs, and supplies to the local Cumberland-North Yarmouth schools.
