Foundation 51 Grants Awarded

January 5, 2010- Foundation 51 Funds Grants for MSAD 51 Cumberland/ North Yarmouth School District for the 2009 Fall Grant Cycle

Grants funded for music, art, and science programs as well as equipment, training and presentations to enhance math and literature curriculum. 

CUMBERLAND/NORTH YARMOUTH – Foundation 51 has announced the recipients of its Fall 2009 grants cycle, with $12,651.00 awarded to grant applicants within the Cumberland/North Yarmouth school community. Foundation 51 is a non-profit organization founded to promote educational excellence within Maine School Administrative District 51, serving students from Cumberland and North Yarmouth.   Teachers, students, parents, and community members are eligible to apply for grants twice a year. Fall 2009 school year grant recipients are as follows:

  Mabel I Wilson (Grades K-2)

  •  “Let’s Visit Hawaii with our Instruments”-A collection of 20 ukuleles and equipment to support a new music unit

Drowne Road School (Grades 3)

  •     “Leveled Non- Fiction Library for Grade 3” - Over 350 appropriately leveled non-fiction books to support 3rd grade reading instruction.

 North Yarmouth Memorial School (Grades 4-5) 

  •   “Headphones”Headphones to travel with laptops to be used with Everyday Math Games

  •  “Art Supplies for the Classroom”- 24 sets of watercolors and watercolor paper to be used in art projects within the classroom

 Grades 3-5

  • Calef Brown’s Art & Poetry”- A visit by Maine poet and illustrator Calef Brown and a collection of Calef Brown Books

 Greely Middle School (Grades 6-8)-

  • “The Telling Room Comes to GMS”- Presentations for students and professional development for staff by staff members from The Telling Room
  • “Traveling Science”- Presenter from the Boston Museum of Science to conduct Cryogenics: Heat and Temperature presentation
  • “Overheads in Math”- Document Camera to be used with existing LCD projector
  • “Improv Theater with a Middle East Theme”- Teacher workshops and student presentations by Al Miller centered on modern Middle Eastern themes.

 Greely High School (Grades 9-12)-

  • “Literature Circles”- 8 sets of 5 books with emphasis on recently published, high interest and highly relevant materials to support Literature Circles within the American Literature curriculum.

 The Foundation 51 Board also voted at their January meeting to purchase a portable defibulator for use at the school and community athletic fields as a gift to the community. 

The deadline for Spring 2010 grant applications is February 26, 2010.  Applications are available at www.foundation51.org.  Teachers, staff, parents and students of MSAD 51 are encouraged to apply.  Each grant request is reviewed by a team of parents, students, and educators to determine where our dollars will have a valuable impact on the students of our community.

Foundation 51’s promotes educational excellence in MSAD 51 by funding initiatives that improve teaching and learning and by inspiring community involvement for the benefit of our schools. To date, the Foundation has funded $315,871 in school activities, learning programs, and supplies to the local Cumberland-North Yarmouth schools.

Foundation 51’s largest fundraiser is an Annual Auction which was held Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Pineland, raising over $45,000.  The Foundation 51 Board shares its appreciation for all sponsors, donors, volunteers, and participants of this event.
