"Therapeutic Horseback Riding for Students with Special Needs"
Grant Writer - Amy Jacobson, MIW, Special Education Teacher
"People in Your Neighborhood"
Grant Writer - The Board of Trustees of Skyline Farm
This grant took 175 second grade and multi-age students to the 200 year-old Skyline Farm in North Yarmouth for a learning initiative called, "People in Your Neighborhood". Skyline Farm is a treasure in the community as its open space and historic buildings, including a carriage museum, have been lovingly preserved for recreational and education use. The purpose of this initiative was to teach the kids about North Yarmouth's history and give them an appreciation of how their local community has evolved over time.
The children explored nine stations where they learned about everything from horsemanship and hoof care to local history and carriage-related vocabulary. They examined a governess cart, an old-time hearse and a peddler's wagon. The children played old-fashioned hoop games, planted bean seeds and caressed a very adorable pony. A wagon ride behind two one-ton Percherons certainly gave them an appreciation for genuine horse-power. "That was triple awesome", said second-grader Devon Moynihan. "It was the best field trip ever!".

"Spanish and Bilingual Spanish/English Books"
Grant Writer - Suzannah Wood, GMS 8th Grade Spanish Teacher
Congratulations to Lydia Wickard for placing first in the state on the high school Level 2 National Spanish Exam in 2011. This is especially tremendous since Lydia was still in middle school at the time! We are proud to say that a Foundation 51 grant for Spanish books helped her with this achievement.
Lydia says, “I like learning through reading so the books helped me get ahead”.
“Lydia has spent a lot of time with the books in the Spanish Department's lending library," says her mom, Louisa. "The books were one of the first extensions recommended by her teacher, Suzannah Wood. Hooray for that Foundation 51 funding!”

In these tough budget times, there just isn't enough money to go around, so we know your decision making process was probably challenging.
